Istanbul Through the Senses
A mixed group writing journey
Every so often, writers need a change of scene – new, fresh and unusual material for their work and ideas. Istanbul Through the Senses is a unique writing course, its aim to satisfy and even surpass this need. Over five days, the course will focus on each of the five senses, and use these themes to experience one of the most sensory-bound and stimulating cities in the world. The course will follow a simple daily pattern: visit a carefully chosen selection of sites in the morning, and discuss and write up notes, reflections and ideas in the afternoon workshops.
The tutor, author and publisher Jan Fortune, will run the afternoon group workshop, setting writing exercises pertinent to each sense, and discussing the morning ‘journals’, and/or unrecorded thoughts and possibilities. Handouts with extracts from Turkish writers (poetry and prose), will be distributed for further stimulus and to help understand the background of Turkey’s rich and fascinating literary history, and offer some kind of context to your own work. Jan will be available during the afternoon for one-to-one tutorials.
Primarily, the course is designed to give writers an unforgettable opportunity to explore, question and develop ideas and new or ongoing projects in an alluring and beautiful context. Known on the one hand for its aesthetic beauty and mystique, Istanbul is also a place of many names, eras and identities. Istanbul’s mergence of art, mystery and multi-cultural influence - where East and West meet in fantastic as well as violent and brutal ways – is exciting, disturbing and thought-provoking, essential ingredients for observant and interested writers. Combine this setting with the support and conversation of motivated writers, and the expertise of published tutors, and you will return home with a sharpened and shifted perspective and renewed understanding of writing, dramatic environments and their impact on your work.
As Istanbul itself is a city of mergence and cross-roads, so it is inevitable that during the focus on a sense a day the other senses will crowd in. However, as much as is possible, the schedule below is tailored so that each place matches each sense as obviously and intuitively as possible.
